Motional’s Approach to Safety

Driverless vehicles have the potential to fundamentally improve road safety by eliminating accidents caused by human error. Motional’s autonomous vehicles are never drunk, drowsy, or distracted. They’re expert drivers; singularly focused on the task at hand: safely traveling from point A to point B.

We employ the highest safety standards at every stage of our development, testing, and deployment.

In 2021, Motional released a Voluntary Safety Self-Assessment (VSSA), which offers an in-depth look at our safety approach. In the VSSA, we outline our safety validation process which includes what we describe as our three main test settings: simulation, closed course, and public roads. We voluntarily made the VSSA public so that any member of the public can learn more about Motional’s rigorous safety standards and processes.

    Safety First White Paper

    We co-authored the Safety first for Automated Driving white paper, the most comprehensive report on how to build, test, and operate safe self-driving vehicles. It was published under ISO as a technical report, reinforcing the paper’s importance for the industry.

    nuScenes Open Datasets

    We pioneered safety-focused data sharing with the release of Motional’s nuScenes and nuPlan datasets. We released this proprietary data for use by academic researchers with the intention of making all driverless vehicles safer - not just our own.

    We’ve maintained an exceptional driving record of over two million autonomous miles and over 130,000 public rides – all with zero at-fault incidents.

    TÜV SÜD Safety Evaluation

    Before beginning fully driverless operation in 2021, we completed a rigorous and self-imposed two-year safety evaluation process, which included an independent evaluation from TÜV SÜD, a world-leading independent technical service provider.
