Motional’s Approach to Safety

Driverless vehicles have the potential to fundamentally improve road safety by eliminating accidents caused by human error. Motional’s autonomous vehicles are never drunk, drowsy, or distracted. They’re expert drivers; singularly focused on the task at hand: safely traveling from point A to point B.

    We co-authored the Safety first for Automated Driving white paper, the most comprehensive report on how to build, test, and operate safe self-driving vehicles. It was published under ISO as a technical report, reinforcing the paper’s importance for the industry.

    nuScenes Open Datasets

    We pioneered safety-focused data sharing with the release of Motional’s nuScenes and nuPlan datasets. We released this proprietary data for use by academic researchers with the intention of making all driverless vehicles safer - not just our own.

    Before beginning fully driverless operation in 2021, we completed a rigorous and self-imposed two-year safety evaluation process, which included an independent evaluation from TÜV SÜD, a world-leading independent technical service provider.
