We Are Motional

Celebrating Our Official Brand Announcement

Since the formation of our autonomous driving joint venture between Hyundai Motor Group and Aptiv in March, we’ve made significant strides in establishing our corporate structure, building out our leadership team, and logging public road miles to advance our driverless product.

This week, we entered our next phase – and we’re now Motional.

Our mission is to make driverless vehicles a safe, reliable, and accessible reality. We’ll change how the world moves while saving time, money, and lives.

We’re new in name only. Motional is led by driverless technology pioneers who participated in the historic DARPA Grand Challenge and Urban Challenge, and founded nuTonomy, an early leader in the autonomous driving space.

The Motional team was behind some of the industry’s largest leaps forward, including:

  • The first fully-autonomous cross-country drive in the U.S.
  • The launch of the world’s first robotaxi pilot (Singapore; 2016).
  • The successful operation of the world’s most-established public robotaxi fleet (Las Vegas; 2018 – present). In fact, our Las Vegas fleet is notable for providing over 100,000 rides, with 98% of riders rating their experience five-out-of-five stars.

As our employees settled into the newly-named Motional family and virtually commemorated the launch of our brand on August 11, 2020, it was time to officially reveal ourselves to the rest of the world.

Motional President and CEO Karl Iagnemma joined Joann Muller, Jim VandeHei, Helen Witty, and Selika Josiah Talbott for an Axios Engage virtual event to unveil our brand and participate in a conversation on mobility, driverless technology, and future cities.

Afterwards, Karl was joined by Motional CTO Laura Major for a live discussion led by Ed Niedermeyer, communications director for the Partners for Automated Vehicle Education (PAVE) campaign. The three chatted about the future of self-driving vehicles and why 2020 is such a pivotal year for the industry, touching upon COVID’s impact on transportation.

While we’ve been in this space for decades, our journey under the name Motional begins now—and we hope you’ll come along for the ride.
